Because we’ve seen what the dentistry building looks like inside, and we are just jealous. They're over there living it up, while over at the Hunter Centre, we’re just trying to find a chair that doesn’t wobble and a corner that doesn’t echo like a parking garage. We used to have a café. A real café. Now we’ve got vending machines and depression.
We’re here because we believe students deserve better. Not fancier. Not over-the-top. Just better. Spaces that feel like they belong to us. Places to eat, study, talk, nap (@universityofotagonaps), and maybe even smile while doing it. We’re not trying to turn the Hunter into a five-star lounge. But if it ends up with a microwave that doesn’t have a 100-person queue, a comfy chair, and a little sense of community again? That’s a win in our books.
Otherwise, we pretty much just thought a student club for spaces would be cool.
We’re keeping it simple. Our club will have reps from different health science programmes, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physio, TOKO, PIPSA, and more, so everyone who uses the Hunter Centre has a say. We’ll meet every now and then, gather student feedback, and team up with other student groups to push for real improvements.
When it comes to money, we’ll manage funds carefully and openly. That means fundraising events, sponsorships, and contributions from interested clubs to build a budget that actually goes toward making the space better, like new chairs, microwaves, or that elusive pool table. No secret stashes, no surprises. Just students pooling together to improve their hangout.
I just want to emphasise that our plans aren’t about knocking down walls or repainting the place. With student voice at the forefront, we aim to advocate for simple, easily reversible improvements, like installing more microwaves (all properly tested for safety, just like in the halls of residence), adding a games table, extra seating, and whatever else the majority of students suggest. These changes can be made in close collaboration with Property Services. We plan to maintain a tight-knit relationship with them to ensure everything runs smoothly and benefits everyone.
